At the end of the 9th century, the Vikings, people from countries including Denmark and Norway moved to Britain. And their language mixed with Anglo-Saxon and became what we now call Old English. For example, they said housen instead of houses, and shoen instead of shoes. After the Normans took control, they began using the French way of making plural, adding an –s to house and shoe.
