2. The history of the Olympics
The Olympics were founded by Heracles ( the Roman Heracles) , a son of Zeus. The first games were held in Greece in 776 BC. The first winner of a prize was a man named Coroebus (a cook from Elis), who won the sole event at the Olympics, the stade - a run of approximately 192 meters (210 yards). This made Coroebus the very first Olympic champion in history.

3. The Ancient Olympic Games
The ancient Olympic Games grew and continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years. In 393 CE, the Roman emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, abolished the Games because of their pagan influences.

4. The Modern Games
Approximately 1500 years later, a young Frenchmen named Pierre de Coubertin began their revival. Coubertin decided that it was exercise, more specifically sports, that made a well-rounded and vigorous person. Two years later, Coubertin first pitched his idea to revive the Olympic Games.

5. Coubertin’s Revival Speech
Let us export our oarsmen, our runners, our fencers into other lands. That is the true Free Trade of the future, and the day it is introduced into Europe the cause of Peace will have received a new and strong ally. It inspires me to touch upon another step I now propose and in it I shall ask that the help you have given me hitherto you will extend again, so that together we may attempt to realise, upon a basis suitable to the conditions of our modern life, the splendid and beneficent task of reviving the Olympic Games.

6. What are Olympic Medals made of?
The last Olympic gold medal that was actually made from gold was awarded in 1912.
Gold and silver medals are 92.5% silver.
Gold medals must be plated with at least 6 grams of gold.
All Olympic medals must be at least 3 mm thick and at least 60 mm in diameter.
Bronze medals are bronze, an alloy of copper and usually tin
Although the Olympic gold medal is more silver than gold, there are gold medals that are really gold, such as the Congressional Gold Medal and Nobel Prize Medal..

Woman’s boxing was only added to The Olympic Games for the first time in London 2012.
Irelands Katie Taylor
brought home the first Gold
Medal in this
Category to Ireland.

8. The Olympic Rings The symbol of the Olympic Games is composed of five
interlocking rings, colored blue, yellow, black, green, and red on a white field. The colors of the rings represent the flags of the countries that participate in the Olympics. Every flag of a country participating in the Olympics includes one of those colors.

or the five main regions: Africa, the Americas (North and South America are combined), Asia, Europe and Oceania. As it says in the Olympic Charter, the five-ringed symbol "represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games."

10. The Olympic Torch
The Olympic flame is a symbol of the Olympic Games. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics.

11. The fire was reintroduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and it has been part of the modern Olympic Games ever since. In contrast to the Olympic flame proper, the torch relay of modern times, which transports the flame from Greece to the various designated sites of the games, had no ancient precedent and was introduced by Carl Diem at the controversial  1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, The Olympic torch came to Ireland this year and Jedward among many other Irish people got to carry it towards its destination

12. 2016 Olympics The next Olympic Games will take place in Rio, Brazil.
Sprint star Usain Bolt may consider switching to cricket or football after the 2016 Olympics.
The Jamaican, 26, held talks with Shane Warne's Melbourne Stars in October.
But Bolt's agent Ricky Simms told BBC Sport: "He may try his hand at cricket or football when he retires from running but that would be after 2016."
