55 Canción http://www.audiomemory.com/geography.php
"Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica too - These are the countries of Central America - Caribbean on the east, Pacific on the west."

56 MAP INSTRUCTIONS: -COLOR and LABEL all 10 Spanish-speaking countries. 4 bodies of water Los Estados Unidos de América -On the BACK of your map, NEATLY make three headings América del Norte América Central El Caribe and under each heading list the COUNTRIES that are in that region and their CAPITALS. ALL NAMES ON THE MAP SHOULD BE IN SPANISH AND WRITTEN NEATLY.

57 La América del Sur Venezuela Colombia Ecuador Perú Bolivia Paraguay
Uruguay Chile La Argentina

58 Venezuela Caracas

59 Hugo Chavez Venezuelans are split between a majority who says he speaks for the poor, and those who say he has become increasingly autocratic. Very open critic of the US Controversy with oil: seizing private refineries and uses it as “political leverage” with other countries Has been accused of moving towards an authoritarian government like that of Cuba—has close ties to countries like Cuba, Iraq, Iran, and China.

60 Colombia Bogotá Colombia has substantial oil reserves and is a major producer of gold, silver, emeralds, platinum and coal. But it has also been ravaged by a decades-long violent conflict involving outlawed armed groups, drug cartels and gross violations of human rights.

61 Ecuador Quito Also, “Ecuador” means equator.
Ecuador is a patchwork of indigenous communities, including people of colonial Spanish origins and the descendants of African slaves. Its capital, Quito, once a part of the Inca empire, has some of the best-preserved early colonial architecture on the continent. Also, “Ecuador” means equator.

62 (El) Perú Lima Peru's rich and varied heritage includes the ancient Incan capital of Cuzco and the lost city of Machu Picchu. The country boasts spectacular scenery, including Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake. It is rich in copper, silver, lead, zinc, oil and gold. Despite this, Peru's progress has been held back by corruption and the failure of successive governments to deal with social and economic inequality.

63 Machu Picchu – One of the seven wonders of the world?

64 Bolivia La Paz (Sucre) A country of statistical extremes, landlocked Bolivia is the highest and most isolated country in South America. It has the largest proportion of indigenous people, who make up around two-thirds of the population, and is the world's largest producer of tin.

65 Why two capital cities? Sucre is home to the judicial branch of the government. La Paz is home to the president and congress. Sucre was the historical capital, but when the tin mining business started booming near La Paz, the bosses of the mining companies wanted the government moved near them. Hence, there are two capitals.

66 Paraguay Asunción (means assumption)
Up to 95% of Paraguayans are mestizos, people of mixed Spanish and native American descent. Many speak the language of the indigenous Guarani; the rest are bilingual or only speak Spanish. There is a Japanese community, a legacy of post World War II migration. With few mineral resources, Paraguay's economy revolves around agriculture.

67 Uruguay Montevideo Uruguay has traditionally been better off than many other countries in South America, and is known for its advanced education and social security systems and liberal laws governing social issues such as divorce. It was among the first nations in Latin America to establish a welfare state, maintained through relatively high taxes on industry.

68 Chile Santiago Chile is one of South America's most stable and prosperous nations. It has been relatively free of the coups and arbitrary governments that have blighted the continent. The exception was the 17-year rule of General Augusto Pinochet, whose 1973 coup was one of the bloodiest in 20th-century Latin America and whose dictatorship left more than 3,000 people dead and missing.

69 La Argentina Buenos Aires
Argentina stretches 4,000 km from its sub-tropical north to the sub-antarctic south. Its terrain includes part of the Andes mountain range, swamps, the plains of the Pampas and a long coastline. Its people have had to struggle with military dictatorship, a lost war over the Falkland Islands, and severe economic difficulties.

70

71

72

73

74

75 You also need to know where these are…
Tierra del Fuego Islas Galápagos El Río Amazonas La Cordillera de los Andes Las Islas Malavinas And remember the languages that are spoken in the 4 non-Spanish-speaking countries: Brasil = portugués Guyana = inglés Surinam = danés Guyana francesa = francés (Know where these are and the “lenguas” that they speak)

76 Your HOMEWORK for tonight: -Make sure that your South America map is
COLORED and LABELED with all of the countries (including those that don’t speak Spanish). Be sure to include: Tierra del Fuego Islas Galápagos El Río Amazonas La Cordillera de los Andes On the BACK of your map, (1) NEATLY list (in Spanish) all of the countries in one column and their capitals in the column next to them. (2) NEATLY make another section that lists the four other countries. Call this section “No son hispanos” and put next to each name the Spanish name for the language spoken there.
