14 Teacher notes and printables
This is a short and simple lesson that will make a huge difference for your students! Resources needed: Computer/projector/PowerPoint Spanish language books, magazines, or newspapers Post-it notes or small pieces of paper Wall or bulletin board space to hang cognates Printer (optional) Time needed: 45-55 minutes

15 Teacher instructions 1.) Go over the first 2 slides that explain what a cognate is and show examples. 2.) Give them a minute to read over slide 4 and make a list of the cognates they see. 3.) Show the bolded cognates on slide 5. Now that they recognize these cognates, can they figure out the main idea of the message on that slide? 4.) Remind students that they don't need to know the meaning of every word to understand the message. 5.) Now it's their turn. Give each student (or pair) a book, magazine, or newspaper. Pass out post-its or paper squares. Give them time to look through their reading materials and write 1 cognate on each paper. 6.) Have them hang their cognates on the wall wherever you have placed the alphabet letters. 7.) Those who finish early can look over the new cognates posted on the wall to see how many they can figure out or can continue reading/looking for cognates. 8.) Slide 7 is a 3-question exit slip for you to see what they learned from the lesson.

16 Printables Here are the alphabet letters to place in an open space. As students tape their words under each letter, it becomes a large-scale cognate dictionary.
