Corrie Ten Boom gave thanks in the midst of trials
Corrie Ten Boom in The Hiding Place relates an incident which taught her this principle. She and her sister, Betsie, had just been transferred to the worst German prison camp they had seen yet, "Ravensbruck". Upon entering the barracks, they found them extremely overcrowded and lice-infested. Their Scripture reading that morning in 1 Thessalonians had reminded them to rejoice always, pray constantly, and give thanks in all circumstances. Betsie told Corrie to stop and thank the Lord for every detail of their new living quarters. Corrie at first flatly refused to give thanks for the lice, but Betsie persisted. She finally succumbed. During the months spent at the camp, they were surprised to find how openly they could hold Bible study and prayer meetings without guard interference. It was several months later when they learned that the guards would not enter the barracks because of the lice.

FOR WHAT should we give thanks?
For the Creation: It’s provisions, it’s beauty, it’s revelation of the majesty, power, wisdom and goodness of God, and man’s place in the creative order.

For our physical provisions
1 Timothy 4: For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

For the coming Kingdom

The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove the disgrace of his people from all the earth. The Lord has spoken. 9 In that day they will say, “Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”

28. Thanksgiving is a prerequisite to:
JOY – Rejoicing in what you have and who you are, instead of gripping about what you don’t have and who you aren’t. CONTENTMENT – Satisfaction with what we have and the way things are, rather than complaining about how we’d prefer things to be. PEACE – With self , others and life because we are thankful for who we are, who our God is, and the lot we have been handed, even in the midst of trials.

29. The Story of Haratio Spafford
An established Lawyer with a legal practice in Chicago.
Had a close active relationship with D.L Moody middle 1800's.
Had invested heavily in real estate on Lake Michigan. He lost it all in the "Chicago Fire" of 1871.
Desiring rest for his wife and four daughters and also to assist Moody and Sankey in one of their campaigns in Great Britain he planned a European trip for his family in Europe in 1873.
Due to last minute business he sent his family ahead of him on the S.S. Ville du Havre. He planned to join them in a few days.
On November 22 the ship was struck by the Lochearn, an English vessel, and sank in twelve minutes. Several days later Mrs. Spafford was able to cable him with, "Saved alone."
On his trip to meet his bereaved wife he penned the words “It Is Well With My Soul” at the location he had lost his daughters.
