Impressionist & Post-Impressionist Painters
A collection of Impressionist art Title Tile

There are several characteristics of Impressionism:
What is Impressionism? Impressionism is a style of painting that began in Paris, France in the mid-1800s. Unlike artists before them, the impressionists painted most of their paintings outdoors and liked to portray natural subjects like trees, fields, and oceans. Impressionists would often take their materials outdoors and paint what they saw. This is called painting “en plein air.” The style was called impressionism because the artists were not as exacting about painting a realistic picture. There are several characteristics of Impressionism: Ordinary people and situations are often the subjects Short, visible brush strokes are often used Light and shadow was important They used color to depict light The paintings featured backgrounds and not just the subject in the center What is Impressionism?

Edouard Manet ( ) Edouard Manet was born in 1832 in France and died in He transitioned from realism to impressionism. With his painting Luncheon on the Grass, Manet received a lot of criticism but it also got the attention of several other painters who would then form the impressionist style.

Claude Monet ( ) Claude Monet was born in 1840 in France. He was one of the most famous impressionist painters. He died from lung cancer in 1926 at the age of 86. He was a purist in the impressionist style and never wavered from it for the duration of his art. In fact, his painting Impression: Sunrise was how impressionism got its name. Monet liked to use his family in paintings.

Mary Cassatt ( ) Mary Cassatt was born in Pennsylvania in She died in 1926 at the age of 82. She worked very closely with fellow painter, Edgar Degas. She is noted for her depictions of women and children, especially the bond between mother and child. She is considered one of America’s most famous female artists.

Paul Cezanne ( ) Paul Cezanne was born in 1839 in France and died in 1906 at the age of 67 from pneumonia. He was considered a post-impressionist painter and started transitioning into cubism. Famous artists Matisse and Picasso credit Cezanne with the birth of cubism. During his impressionist period he painted mostly landscapes and still lifes. He was close friends and influenced greatly by Pissarro.

Edgar Degas ( ) Edgar Degas was born in France in He died in 1917 at the age of 83. He was a firm believer that artists should support one another and he created the first impressionist exhibit. Degas likes to paint women at work and has a particular fondness of ballet dancers. While he painted some landscapes he preferred using people as subjects and liked to capture expressions.

Camille Pissarro ( ) Camille Pissarro was born in St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands in He died in 1903 at age 73. He was the oldest of the Impressionists and was one of the ones who held the group together. He was the only artist of the group who exhibited in all of the Paris Impressionist exhibits. He taught many of the Impressionist painters. He painted many landscapes.

Pierre Renoir ( ) Pierre-August Renoir was born in 1841 in France and died in He was a good friend of Claude Monet and they often painted together. In fact because of that many of their painting styles are nearly identical. Renoir primarily painted people because he loved to capture expression. He is especially noted for painting women, children and groups of happy people. He loved beauty in paintings and avoided darker, depressing subjects.

Paul Gauguin ( ) Paul Gauguin was born in France in 1848 and died in He was a post impressionist artist who worked with painting as well as other mediums such as sculpture, ceramics and writing. He was influenced greatly by Pissarro and Cezanne. His impressionist style paintings were the beginning of his art and he is better known for other styles. During his impressionism period he painted some portraits but mostly used landscapes and still lives as subjects.

Georges Seurat ( ) Georges Pierre Seurat was born in France in 1859 and died in He started painting young in various styles and dabbled in Impressionism. He exhibited in the final Impressionist exhibit where he revealed his masterpiece A Sunday on La Grande Jatte which was a similar style but used very small dots instead of brush strokes to blend colors. This was the beginning of the new movement pointillism.

Vincent Van Gogh ( ) Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853 in the Netherlands. He was a post impressionist painter with many famous pieces of art. He died in 1890 at the age of 37 by committing suicide because he suffered from mental illness. He is one of the most famous painters in history. He created numerous self portraits and has many themed paintings such as his work with flowers, portraits, self portraits and landscapes. Many of his most famous works were created in the final years of his life.
