1 Prime and Composite Numbers
Numbers multiplied to form a product are factors of the product. 2 x 8 = 16 factor factor product 2 and 8 are factors of What other factors can you name? 2 8

2 Activity: You will need color tiles or congruent squares and/or grid paper. Find all the rectangles you can make using each number of tiles from 2 to 20. Record each rectangle neatly on grid paper. Write a multiplication sentence that describes the number of tiles in each rectangle. Do the same for 2, 3, 16, and 20 Be prepared to share your results! Work on Factor Pizzazz handout

3 Check i t out! What is a prime number? Give an example of one.
= a number with only two factors: 1 and itself ex: 23 Check i t out! The prime factors of 24 are 2 and 3. Why? (the factors are 1,2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24 = you can only get 2 and 3 by multiplying those numbers by one)

4 What is a composite number? Give an example of one.
= a number with more than two factors ex: 16 What are common factors? Can you give an example? = numbers that share the same factors Ex: 12 – 1,2, 3, 4, 6, so, 1, 2, 3, and 6 are 18 – 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, “common” to both
