11 …real change, lasting change, change that impacts the students who need it the most, happens at the classroom level. The true power of making a difference for a student lies in the hands of the teacher. The teacher is always the key.

12 Students reflect our perspective of them…Over the course of the year, my students slowly responded to my belief that they were capable of learning…they learned to believe in themselves, in part because I believed in them.

13 Pause Procedure Take a minute to pause and digest what you have heard. Think about the information and make notes on your “note taking sheet”.

14 Quick Write! Quick Draw! Quick Write about the benefits of keeping students engaged during a lesson. Get our your Processing card (tent it) – show the Still Thinking side until you are done and then switch to Ready to Share.

15 Chalkboard Splash In their TABLE groups they will write down any similarities, differences, and surprises.

16 Beach ball – one student answering and recall questions
Fluff – a lot of engagement but low cognition question Receivement Gap – Lecture format; receiving good information but no participation TPTs – High cognition and high participation

17 What does this remind you of? The Rigor and Relevance Framework.

18 The Bottom Line “In order to effectively increase the rigor in your classroom, it is essential to incorporate elements of student motivation and engagement.” “Higher-order thinking thrives on interaction. When students bounce ideas off of each other, the exchange generates more ideas in a nonthreatening setting.”

19 to discuss how movement and learning are connected?
Bounce Cards Use the Bounce Cards to discuss how movement and learning are connected?

20 Take a Minute… Take a minute to look at a strategy in your ring that we haven’t talked about yet. Read about it, take some notes on your sheet and be prepared to share out about that strategy. We will still be doing Study-Tell-Help-check, Explain to your Neighbor and Whip around or pass so you might want to choose something else. Take time to share out what you discovered with a partner.

21 Explain it to your neighbor
Take the TPT you just studied and explain it with a partner. Between the two of you generate questions to clarify what you don’t understand. (In reality your pair would join another and do the same). Coming back together you would clarify any misunderstandings as a whole group. Explain and clarify the strategy you just read about with your partner , ask questions as necessary. Other partner explains their strategy.

22 Partner tells all you can
Study-Tell-Help-Check Study your Notes, 1st Partner tells all you can remember. 2nd partner helps. Check your notes. Study-tell-help-check about the notes you have taken so far. Explain and clarify, ask questions as necessary.

23 Whip around or pass In order, whip around and tell us which strategy you are going to use first in your classroom and why. If someone takes your answer or you can’t think of one…you may “pass”.

24 Thinking about today – how much do you know now about student engagement?
I could write a book about it! Just a little 1 5

25 Today’s Content Outcomes Today’s Literacy Objectives
Explore Total Participation Techniques to increase Rigor and Student Engagement Increase mathematical content and pedagogy with number sense Today’s Literacy Objectives 1. Thumbs up/down/in between: did we accomplish our objectives for today? 2. Meet with champagne partner and share which technique will be implemented with details-which subject, how, preparation to use. 3. Extras in folder. Listen and discuss applications of TPT in the classroom Read and write to make connections with TPT content and math number sense

26 Make It – Take It Use the time remaining to get your cards cut and punched. Put on rings. Hopefully you can begin using these and we will share at our next PD. I will also try to bring some more of these to our remaining PD’s. 1. Thumbs up/down/in between: did we accomplish our objectives for today? 2. Meet with champagne partner and share which technique will be implemented with details-which subject, how, preparation to use. 3. Extras in folder.
