2 Educational media Education What is media?
Reasons for using media in instruction and learning What is technology? What is educational technology? Learning with and from media and technology

3 Education Part 1 of 2 … Etymologically, the word education is derived from the Latin ēducātiō and ēdūcō which means: I Bring up I lead forth I raise I lead I conduct 5

4 Education Education Learning Instruction Direct instruction
Part 2 of 2 … Education Instruction Learning Direct instruction Indirect instruction Lecturer Lecturers tell the students the concept or skill to be learned and then lead them through instructional activities designed to result on student learning. Lecturer’s direction is limited, with em- phasis on students co-creating their learning with the lecturer as a facili- tator of their learning. Lecturer Learner Learning is acquiring new or modifying existing knowledge,  behaviors, skills,  values,or preferencesand may involve synthesizing different types of information. 10

6 What is media? Part 1 of 1 … In general terms media means television, radio and news- papers that are used to spread news or information. Media is defined as all means of communication, whatever its format. Media includes symbol systems as diverse as print, graphics, animation, audio and motion pictures. 2

8 Reasons for using media in teaching & learning
Part 1 of 1 … Lecturers should apply media in instruction-learning activities because media can: Replace the lack of learners’ experience. Represent anything that is not available in the lecture hall. Replace the direct interaction between learners and their environment. Direct learners’ obervations to the important things. Increase the motivation of learners. 5

10 What is technology? Part 1 of 1 … Etymologically the word technology is derived from Greek ‘tekhno’ (art, skill, craft, method, system) and ‘logos’ (study of). The word technology (the Latin form is ‘texere’, to weave or construct) does not necessarily imply the use of machines, but rather refers to any practical art using scientific knowledge. Technology is a rational discipline designed to assure the mastery of man over nature, through the application of scientific laws. Technology is not a collective noun for technological devices. 4

12 What is educational technology?
Part 1 of 2 … Educationaltechnology Instructional technology Learning technology Is a discipline in which in- structional techniques and the application of suppor- tive technical devices are studied. Is the study and practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources. 7

15 Learning with & from media & technology
Part 1 of 6 … Learning ‘from’ technology means that educational technology is used to present and explain the meaning of content. The instructional process in this approach includes the following steps: Exposing learners to messages encoded in media and delivered by technology. Learners perceive and decode these messages. Learners respond to indicate that messages have been received, and Providing feedback as to the adequacy of the response. 6

16 Learning with & from media & technology
Part 2 of 6 … Learning ‘with’ technology refers to using educational technology as cognitive tools in a constructivist learning environment. In the cognitive tools approach, media and technology are given directly to learners to use for representing and expressing what they know. An expert system or an electronic performance support system (EPSS) is an example of a cognitive tool. 3

17 Learning with & from media & technology
Part 3 of 6 … Computer software programs are examples of exceptionally powerful cognitive tools. Examples of cognitive tools: Word processing software Spreadsheet software Visualisation software Expert system shells Mindmap software 7

18 Learning with & from media & technology
Part 4 of 6 … Cognitive tools have their greatest effectiveness when they are applied within constructivist learning environments. Cognitive tools empower learners to design to construct their own representations of knowledge rather than absorbing representations preconceived by others. Cognitive tools can be used to support the deep reflective thinking that is necessary for meaningful learning. 3

19 Learning with & from media & technology
Part 5 of 6 … Cognitive tools enable mindful, challenging learning. The source of the tasks or problems to which cognitive tools are applied should be guided by teachers. Ideally, tasks or problems for the application of cognitive tools will be situated in realistic contexts with results that are personally meaningful for learners. Using multimedia construction programs as cognitive tools engages many skills in learners such as: project management skills research skills 6

20 Learning with & from media & technology
Part 6 of 6 … organisation skills representation skills presentation skills reflection skills 4
