3 Your Mission To design a solar oven that will create the most thermal energy in 45 minutes using common supplies (cardboard boxes (shoe box, pizza box, larger box, etc.) tin foil, plastic wrap, newspaper, etc.) You must work in groups of 3 or 2 (need team name) You will calculate volume of oven (minimum of 1,000cm3, joules of energy converted, and power of oven You can choose to bring ingredients from the provided recipes (only) to make something for your group/self

6 Provided Items Tin foil (about 4 sheets (8.5x11))
Plastic wrap (about 4 sheets of 8.5x11) 2 sheets black paper (which I would like back at the end) Glue, staples, tape (not very strong)

7 Items Your Team Must Provide
The container (be creative!) Extra tin foil (if needed) Extra plastic wrap (if needed) Insulation (if needed) Substitutes for any of the above materials (for example: if you want plexi-glass or something more heavy duty then plastic wrap) Any pre-cooked food items (basically we are only melting or re-heating foods for safety reasons, must come packaged)

8 WARNINGS: Please use caution when cutting cardboard, especially with sharp scissors or exacto knives Please only bring food that is pre-cooked and packaged DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN!

9 Calendar of Events 4/2/13 Tuesday: Create Teams, Team Name, Brainstorm Ideas, preliminary list of materials 4/8/13 Monday: GUARDIAN SIGNATURE is REQUIRED. 41 Section 3 notes USING HEAT:

42 Heating Systems Heating systems vary depending on climate Before only stoves/fires used to heat: but is a slow process

43 Forced Air Systems Furnace warms air, then spreads air using ducts and vents Cool air is returned to be heated again Most common in US

44 Radiator Systems Closed metal container with hot water or steam Through conduction, thermal energy passed to the surrounding air

45 Electric Heating Systems
Electric coils in floors heat surrounding air by conduction, then convection currents heats the rest of the room

46 Solar Heating Buildings use the sun’s radiation in 2 ways Passive: materials easily absorb radiation and heat naturally Active solar: solar cells

47 Need lots of south facing windows
Passive Solar Heating

48 Active Solar Heating Uses solar collectors, photovoltaic (PV) cells, or solar panels to create electricity or warm water to radiate heat

49 Thermodynamics The study of how thermal energy, heat, and work are related Heat and work increase TE Heat can only move from warm to cold, unless work is done (think about rubbing your hands together)

50 Converting Heat to Work
Heat engine: converts thermal energy to mechanical energy ME=____+_____ Internal Combustion Engines: fuel is burned inside cylinders and turn heat to work j8QvsiAdU Converts only 25% of heat to mechanical energy- 75% of heat is lost (that’s why coolant is needed!)

51 Heat Movers Heat movers move TE from one location to another at a different temp

52 Heat Mover: Refrigerators
Does work so that heat can move from inside refrigerators to outside Needs coolant: evaporates at a low temperature Liquid coolant->gas (cool)->pumped to coils in fridge and TE goes from warm to cold->warm gas compressed doing work-> becomes warmer then outside air and heat flows to outside air, process starts all over again.

53 Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps
Air conditioners: Work like refrigerators, just does the opposite Heat pump: can cool and warm air

54 Human Coolant As sweat evaporates absorbs TE, taking heat away from your body
