6 GRUNDTVIG - EUROPEAN COOPERATION IN ADULT EDUCATION Why the name "GRUNDTVIG"? Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig (1783-1872), a Danish clergyman and writer, is regarded as the founder of the Nordic tradition of "learning for life". - His "folk high school" concept was based on the idea that education must be available to all citizens throughout life and should encompass not only knowledge but also civic responsibility, personal and cultural development.

7 GRUNDTVIG - EUROPEAN COOPERATION IN ADULT EDUCATION GRUNDTVIG promoted soft values like wisdom, compassion, identification and equality. The objectives of Grundtvig - Grundtvig addresses all adult learners who, at whatever stage of their lives, wish to increase their capacity to play a full and active role in society, to develop their intercultural awareness, to improve or update their general skills or to enhance their capacity to enter or re-enter formal education.

8 GRUNDTVIG - EUROPEAN COOPERATION IN ADULT EDUCATION - It also concerns people of whatever age who have left school without basic qualifications, and parental and family learning of all kinds. - Special attention is given to encouraging activities relating to persons lacking basic education and qualifications, people living in rural or disadvantaged areas or who are disadvantaged for socio-economic reasons, persons belonging to other "hard to reach" groups reluctant to take part in lifelong learning, and disabled persons with special educational needs.

9 GRUNDTVIG - EUROPEAN COOPERATION IN ADULT EDUCATION - Grundtvig is open to people in all types of organisations who contribute to providing adults with formal or non-formal learning opportunities, higher education institutions reaching out to adult learners, local and regional authorities, enterprises and trade unions, non-profit organisations, neighbourhood organisations, cultural bodies such as libraries, art galleries and museums, bodies involved in education for senior citizens, sports associations, prisons, rehabilitation centres and hospitals.
